The Best Reminder in the Lord's Recovery
For a full forty years, almost every year—indeed, every season—we would meet; we were quite intimate fellow soldiers.
Earlier, when his body was still good, on the eve of each of the seven yearly conferences and trainings, the phone would often ring, and I would hear that familiar voice:
"Guanghui, I'm here; where are you?" And so I myself also received grace and dared not miss a training or conference. As soon as I saw him, the fellowship was sweet and my heart was full of joy; sometimes it went deep into the night, and we were still full of interest, because the topic was always for the work of that ministry.
In 2003, at the first perfecting training for students and scholars in New Jersey, on the very first night there was a call for consecration. That evening, ninety-nine consecration cards were received. He was concerned about this and stayed until the very last before leaving the meeting place. At that time, we had the same feeling that we should consider laying on of hands to receive the consecrated ones.
From the beginning he fully supported the students-and-scholars work; what I heard most often was: "We still have to work hard!" In the years that followed, he added another sentence: "It's not easy!"
Each time I saw him in the service, inwardly I felt settled, feeling that this service had blessing and hope!
In 2009, we began to run the returning-overseas-students and the pan-Asia plans. When going, I would always first go to Taipei to fellowship with him; before returning to the US, I would also go to find him. Somehow, seeing him made me more settled and gave me more burden.
Later, he also flew to Outer Mongolia and, together with us, acted as flying eagles, preaching the gospel and baptizing people in the great river. At that time, I felt that the Lord's move in Asia had blessing and hope!
In 2014, when the business-and-industry brothers had a burden to gather in Hong Kong, seeing him present, my heart again had that settled feeling as before. In 2015 on Jeju Island, with his resounding voice he called people to go down for baptism number by number. In 2016, in Kuching, East Malaysia, with his far-reaching voice he again called people to come out and consecrate; and I felt that this business-and-industry service had blessing and hope.
Last August in Manila, using the gap in his dialysis, in less than twenty-four hours he came to encourage and support the business-and-industry brothers. Again I heard his familiar voice saying to some of the coordinating business-and-industry brothers: "We still have to work hard!"
He was the best reminder in the Lord's recovery!
Postscript: This January, after the winter training, I had a meal with Brother Wu and saw that his right hand had already lost the strength to use a knife and fork…; two months later, the day before he departed, he was still serving the whole day in the Xinji Building. He was "a drink offering being poured out."
