A Large Heart and the Wisdom to Govern
In the pre-trip fellowship for the 1993 International Chinese-speaking New Spring Conference—perhaps because there had been an airplane crash the year before—after he finished his fellowship he added one last word: "Everyone, set your hearts at rest. With us children of God aboard, the plane will not fall." His word carried weight and was quite able to set people's hearts at peace.
For the 1994 International Chinese-speaking New Spring Conference, nearly six hundred saints went from Taiwan, divided into eight teams, with the whole itinerary entrusted to a local American travel agency to plan. All four of our family went; we chose the California team, which traveled northward from California, passing through Yosemite and the Grand Canyon and on north to Las Vegas. As we drew near, someone asked Brother Wu, "Why do we Christians come to a place like this?" Brother Wu said, "Let you take a look at what is called a vain and deceitful world." Everyone instantly fell silent.
In the autumn of 2002 the International Elders' and Responsible Brothers' Training was held in Brazil; to coincide with the inauguration of the Brazil Shell Conference Hall, it was held early, in September. It left a deep impression on me. The Mid-Autumn night of that year was spent on a boat on the Amazon River. The next morning, when everyone got up, quite naturally they fellowshipped in twos and threes nearby. As it happened, Brother Wu was right there, and I walked over to listen to their fellowship. A young brother in his thirties asked some very pointed questions, saying that a certain church in Taiwan was very peculiar—it seemed not ordinarily to have fellowship with the churches. Brother Wu said, "That church has no problem; we have all grown up drinking the same milk, and their responsible brother and I often have fellowship."
It is just as is said in The Elders' Management of the Church: the first qualification of one who is an elder is to have a large heart; the one thing most needed by one who governs God's people is wisdom, but the secret of wisdom lies in having a large heart. In Brother Wu such a good pattern was seen. Thank the Lord for granting such a good steward of the varied grace of God to His Body!
