Serving with the "Heart"
With All His Heart and Strength, Devoting Himself Utterly
In 2003, after the Hong Kong Bible Study Center was established, we had more opportunities to see Brother Wu in Hong Kong.
Each time I met him at the airport, he was travel-worn and basically carried no suitcase. When I asked whether he wanted to rest a bit or eat something, he always said he did not need to, and just went to the meeting hall. As soon as he arrived, he would fellowship with the brothers, or meet, or handle various matters, always until very late before returning to the hotel to rest. Though I watched him being weary, he had not the slightest displeasure but was still joyful.
Each time I gazed at his receding figure as he returned to his room, in my heart I always thought: "Why does the brother labor like this? Yes—for the building up of the Body of Christ!"
Last year during the July training in the United States, the brothers had arranged to fellowship at the Cerritos meeting hall. Just as the fellowship was about to begin, an earthquake suddenly struck; I was just about to walk out of the room, and before I had even turned around, I ran into Brother Wu walking in as if nothing had happened, perfectly composed. We sat down to prepare to fellowship, and of course the earthquake stopped too.
I thought to myself: "Thank the Lord! With a veteran like Brother Wu leading us, we must learn from him to trust in the Lord!"
Brother Wu had an astonishing memory: without using a notebook, he could record many people, matters, and things in an orderly way—something that many people today, even with the aid of electronic devices, could not match. Once I asked him how he could remember so many things and handle them so well, and he said, "I often use my heart to think about them, so I naturally remember!" The new way indeed has no shortcut; it is a way of diligent labor, and Brother Wu was a pattern of serving with the "heart."
Although Brother Wu daily bore the burden of the churches and the affairs of the bookroom, handling all kinds of situations, yet when he supplied the Lord's word, he was always strong in spirit, his words resounding and forceful, every word a gem, full of revelation and experience. Thank the Lord for the gift He gave us for His church!
