Humbly Condescending, Practicing in Person
In May of 2008, when I had been saved for less than a year, Brother Wenchen took us to Dallas to attend the Memorial Day conference. Before the conference there was a fellowship of the Chinese-speaking saints, and Wenchen encouraged several of us newly saved lambs to share our experience of reading through the Bible once in a year with the RSG. After the fellowship, a brother of sturdy build, with thick eyebrows and large eyes, with a kind and benevolent countenance, walked up to me, shook my hand and greeted me, and handed me a name card printed with "Taiwan Gospel Book Room." This was the first time I came to know Brother Wu. The brother encouraged me to love the Lord well and to read the Bible much, and warmly invited me to visit the churches in Taiwan whenever I had the opportunity. Only later did I come to know that Brother Wu was a "great" brother in the Lord's recovery, but at that time Brother Wu was so unassuming, so amiable, so full of an approachable warmth. Yet at the time I had been saved only a short while, and both my life and my knowledge were very shallow; only gradually did I come to understand that this was the natural expression of the maturity of the life of Christ. Praise the Lord!
Later I had the opportunity to visit Taiwan. Brother Wu was a very busy man, and I had been saved only a few years, the smallest of the small in the Lord, a little brother who was nothing at all. Yet several times Brother Wu either personally or through the arrangement of brothers warmly received me; I remember once he personally drove to National Taiwan University to pick me up, and together we went to Taoyuan and Zhongli to blend and to have a love feast, and he also hosted me at the Xinji Building.
Later, attending conferences in various places many times and the perfecting trainings in New Jersey, I had the opportunity to receive Brother Wu's personal leading and fellowship on many occasions. I was attracted by Brother Wu's broad bosom and his upright, frank, and bold character, and even more moved by his absolute faithfulness and shrewdness toward the Lord, and his spirit of consecration and sacrifice. Gradually I came to understand that under the leading and promoting of our brother, the system was established whereby the full-time serving ones and the leading brothers of all the churches in Taiwan were rotated every three to five years—truly I greatly praise the Lord for the wisdom He gave our brother, and the church was indeed blessed because of it.
Later I also gradually came to know that Brother Wu was not only the leading brother of all the churches in Taiwan; he also went many times to China to blend with the brothers and sisters in various places, and for ten consecutive years he personally led teams to come and support the training for the students and scholars in North America. I had the opportunity to travel for business to Vietnam, Indonesia, and India, and on each occasion Brother Wu personally sent emails to introduce me to the local brothers so that we could become acquainted and blend.
A few years ago, Taiwan's Academia Historica published a book, Christ and the Church—An Account of Mr. Witness Lee's Life: An Interview Record. After reading it, I felt it was very good! I wanted to recommend it to our brothers and sisters in Raleigh. But at that time it was not for sale in North America or on the internet, so I sent an email to Brother Wu, hoping he could purchase a case on my behalf. Very soon I received Brother Wu's reply—he had already bought them for us. And he asked me whether I was in a hurry; if not, in a few days he could personally bring them over when he came to America to attend a conference! Because the cost of express mailing was too expensive. O Lord Jesus, he was such a busy "great" brother, with so many matters needing his attention, and yet he could be so unassuming and could practice in person in caring for and attending to us, these lowly members—truly, thanks and praise to the Lord!
