He Knew My Weakness, Yet Still Cherished Me

I paused my service for my wife's studies abroad. Young and ignorant at the time, I actually acted on my own without fully fellowshipping with the elder brothers, and became one who abandoned his post without leave. I never imagined that Brother Wu would actually call to check on me on the very morning I boarded the plane to go abroad. Although I did not catch that call, simply hearing of this moved me beyond words. A year and a half later, when he saw me at the central blending center, he did not utter a word of rebuke, only saying, "You're back! Would you like to come to Taipei to learn coordination?" This is our elder brother—always holding hope for those who have no hope.

In my youthful impetuosity I caused trouble; not only did I lack self-awareness, but I even brought a complaint to Brother Wu. Brother Wu, holding back his amusement, patiently counseled this young man who did not know the height of heaven or the depth of earth, talking with me again and again. Another time, on a sudden impulse I wanted to ask his consent to do a certain thing; unwilling to pour cold water on me, he only said earnestly, "Your present service is very important; do it well! Don't let your mind wander." Brother Wu was just like this, time after time accompanying us juniors onward.

A serious illness last year left Brother Wu's body weak, no longer the robust man he once was, but Brother Wu's attitude of caring for the going on of the Lord's recovery grew all the stronger. When several of us brothers serving in the young-people special work went to see him, he was on the one hand receiving treatment and on the other hand charging us to serve well and to open up a new situation. This is our dear brother—all his life faithfully living in the Lord's commission, with his words and his pattern continually inspiring young people to follow in his footsteps and serve the Lord.
