Bearing Great Responsibility Yet Caring for People in Detail
There is one thing I cannot forget, and through it I also learned the love, the carefulness, and the concern that one who serves the Lord ought to have for the saints. I had a pocket-sized set of the Recovery Version of the Holy Bible, the Old and New Testaments, with footnotes, in the separate-volume edition, which I treasured greatly and often carried with me in turn to read. Most unfortunately, I lost the ninth volume on the New York City subway. That summer I attended the training in Anaheim, and at the Church in Cerritos I met Brother Wu. I told him I had lost the ninth volume (Luke, John, Acts) and did not know whether the Taiwan Gospel Book Room sold individual volumes. He said they were not sold individually, but he said nothing further. I thought too that the Book Room would not pull a single volume out of the twelve-volume set to sell to me. After that I forgot about the matter, but I always had a regret in my heart, for lacking one volume the set was incomplete.
That year I attended the winter training. A brother handed me a paper bag, saying it was something Brother Wu had entrusted him to give me. I opened it and looked—and it was actually a brand-new ninth volume of the pocket-sized Bible. I stood there dumbstruck, holding the thin ninth volume in my hand, and for a long while could not recover myself. What kind of brother was this! In the midst of his busy service, a genius-like memory was indeed possible for him; but to use it on a little brother like me—was there any need? Some might feel that this small matter amounts to nothing, but in the midst of the exceedingly weighty responsibilities Brother Wu bore in Taiwan and in many other places, he yet served a little brother in this small matter. May the Lord remember Brother Wu's whole life of laboring to serve the Lord, the church, and the saints, and stir us all up to rise and, like him, serve the Lord and the saints faithfully.
